        FIFTH (5th) PROGRAM OF ONASSIS RESEARCH GRANTS AND
    EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR FOREIGN SCHOLARS,
TEACHERS OF THE GREEK LANGUAGE

AND POST-GRADUATE STUDENTS

ACADEMIC YEAR: Oct 1 1999- Sept 30, 2000


Introduction

The Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation has been administering,
since 1995, a special annual Program of research grants and educational scholarships awarded to foreign academicians, scholars, university professors, Ph.D. researchers, artists, translators of Greek literature, elementary and secondary school teachers of the Greek language as a foreign one, postgraduate students and Ph.D. candidates.

The Foundation offers research -rants and educational scholarships for the
following fields:

- Humanistic Sciences: Philology, Literature, Translation, Linguistics, Theology, History, Archaeology, Philosophy, Educational Studies, Psychology

- Political Science: Sociology, Anthropology, Public Administration, Mass Media

- Law& Economics

- Architecture, Fine Arts, Music, Dance, Theatre, Photography, Cinema

The starting period of the programme will be October of each year, depending on the schedule of the grantees and scholarship recipients.

RESEARCH GRANTS:

These grants are available to foreign scholars working in university or research institutions and academics, and are allotted as follows:

CATEGORY A 1:

Up to five (5) grants for a one-month stay in Greece are offered to academicians and university Full Professors whose scholarly or artistic work has been widely acclaimed
and who wish to visit Greece in order to conduct research or to collaborate with educational or research institutions and/or organizations.

CATEGORY A 11:

Up to five (5) grants for a duration of three (3) up to six (6) months each are offered to
university or equivalent institutions Faculty (Lecturers, Associate Professors. 4ssistant Professors. Full Professors) and Ph.D. researchers of maximum age: fifty five (55) years
old, who wish to perform research in Greece in cooperation with a Greek university, research center, institute, or other educational or research organization.

CATEGORY B:

POST-EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GREEK LANGUAGE TEACHERS
(ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY LEVEL)

These scholarships, no more than five (5) and for a maximum duration of two
(2) months. are addressed to active elementary or high school foreign teachers. who teach Greek language (modern or ancient Greek), or literature, or Greek history and civilization.

These scholarships aim at rendering possible the acquaintance, collaboration and exchange of information between the scholarship recipients and their Greek colleagues
in Greek schools, education or other relevant departments of Greek universities.

This programme presupposes that the scholarship recipients will continue
offering their services to their country of origin, after they have completed their training in Greece. For this reason a recommendation by the Director of the school or educational institution, where the applicant is teaching. is necessary.

CATEGORY C:

POST-GRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS

These scholarships, no more than ten (10) and for a duration of six (6) up to twelve (12) months, are awarded to foreign post graduate students and Ph.D. candidates, LIP
to forty (40) years of age, who pursue studies in universities, scholarly or research centers or Fine Art schools outside Greece or in Greece. The subject of the thesis or Ph.D. dissertation Should be approved in advance by the University and the supervising professor Must concur in the necessity of conducting the study in Greece.
